Vaping vs Smoking: What are their differences?

By IQOS Team

vaping vs smoking

With the many alternatives to cigarettes that exist on the market today, adult smokers are likely to have heard of vaping and e-cigarettes. The thing that may concern many of these people, is the difference between vaping and smoking and whether vaping is safe or not.

Is vaping safe?

Firstly, you need to note that none of the nicotine-containing products are safe. The best decision any smoker can make is to quit tobacco and nicotine use altogether. For those adults who would otherwise continue to smoke, we will try to explain the key difference between vaping and smoking. To begin with, smoking involves lighting a cigarette and letting it burn. This process of burning, called combustion, produces cigarette smoke.

Vapes, or e-cigarettes, do not burn tobacco. Rather, they use e-liquids that are heated to specific temperatures using a battery powered heating component. When the e-liquid is heated, a vapor is generated. No combustion takes place and as a result, no cigarette smoke is produced.

Vaping products are not risk-free, and they deliver nicotine, which is addictive. Vapes must not be used by minors, people who have quit smoking, or people who have never smoked before.

All nicotine-containing products should not be used during pregnancy or while breastfeeding and should not be used by people who have or are at risk of heart disease, are diabetic, or experience epileptic episodes.

Vaping vs smoking

The high temperatures that are produced during the cigarette combustion are responsible for the generation of most of the harmful chemicals which are detected on high levels in the cigarette smoke. When the tobacco is burnt, more than 6.000 chemical substances are released, around 100 of which have been identified as potential causes of smoking-related diseases.

Vaping products work by heating e-liquids, many of which contain nicotine. They don’t feature combustion, they don’t produce cigarette smoke and they make for a better alternative compared to conventional smoking.

What is the difference between e-cigarettes and vapes?

None. They’re the same thing! E-cigarettes and vapes belong to the same category of electronic smoke-free products. They utilize e-liquids and produce vapor. Vaping is the action of using an e-cigarette or vape.
